The University of Melbourne to Develop Clinical and Academic Exchange Programs with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the University of Patras.

On Thursday 17 November a group of delegates from the Hellenic Medical Society of Australia and Hellenic Diaspora World Congress met with representatives from the University of Melbourne’s faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. The delegates included, a group representing the Hellenic Medical Society of Australia (HMSA), Greek University Professors, Greek General Secretary of the Ministry of Health, the Governor of Attica, the General Secretary of the Global Doctors Hippocratic Institute as well as a team representing the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM). Hosted on the beautiful grounds of Melbourne University, the party embarked on a round table discussion about potential collaborations in areas such as cardiology, cancer and infectious disease research. The highlight of the meeting was the signing of an agreement between The University of Melbourne, The University of Patra and the National Kapodistrian University of Athens. The signed agreement facilitates the development of important exchange programs and visitations for various groups, including undergraduates, postgraduates, and postdocs students. The Chair of the Conference A/Prof Marinis Pirpiris and Treasurer of the GCM stated the following about the important agreement: "I am pleased to have helped develop the collaboration between the University of Melbourne, the National Kapodistrian University of Athens and the University of Patra. With a commitment to cooperation in the fields of teaching and research the three Universities will explore the future engagement opportunities in joint activities such as lectures, seminars, workshops and visits, the exchange of academic materials, the exchange of faculty and the establishment of joint cultural programs. This is a wonderful and unique opportunity, which will help build partnerships and academic collaborations and create connections between students and academics from diverse backgrounds with a shared commitment and passion to overcome the challenges of the future."

Prof Nicola Lautenschlager, Head, Melbourne Medical School said “The University of Melbourne values deeply this new and promising relationship with the Universities of Athens and the University of Patras. Together, there will be collaboration, the exchange of ideas and a way for our students to illuminate their curiosity and knowledge.This exchange will help keep our students at the forefront of innovation in medicine and medical research”. The University of Melbourne will use these relationships to enhance the education of our medical students and to nurture the passion for medicine”.

Prof Georgios Adonakis,Dean ,School of Medicine,University of Patras shared his excitement about the agreement “ With great honour signed today an agreement with the University of Melbourne School. It is of the highest calibre medical education institutions in Australia. This event marks the collaboration of both nations, it’s undergraduate students, postgraduate students, teaching staff and marks the exchange of research and clinical content.

That means a lot for young doctors. It is a great advantage to have experience in today's era of globalization. It must also be noted that it is a great bonus to have experience and knowhow shared by large institutions, like University of Melbourne - School of Medicine.”

The President Of GCM, Bill Papastergiadis OAM, said “Greece and Australia share a rich history and common values. Strengthening our ties is a vital part of the work of the Greek Community of Melbourne. The achievement of an agreement between the Universities in the field of medicine is a wonderful outcome which will lead to exchanges of both students and academic personnel. Developing these connections and promoting shared research will add significantly to the educational and cultural fabric of Australia and Greece. I look forward to continuing to develop in the near future other additional relationships not just in medicine but other academic fields. Students in Melbourne will now have the chance to work and learn in the birthplace of Hippocrates, acknowledged as arguably the father of medicine.”

Mena Giannelis, Assistant Treasurer of the GCM also highlighted the importance of the agreement. Mena said, “It’s a great honour to be part of the discussions and planning of the collaborative agreement between the University of Melbourne in Australia and Greek universities. It is a fantastic opportunity for undergraduate and post graduate students in Australia and in Greece to further their studies and research in each other’s countries. This collaborative agreement will be the first of its kind for Melbourne University and Greek universities, we hope that it will continue for a long time in the future.”

After the signing of the agreement Dr Marios Themistokleous,General Secretary,Ministry of Health, Greece stated that “ I am very happy to be here and we are supporting the agreement signed between the three universities and we believe these kind of collaborations will lead to exchange ideas between these institutions especially in researching, medical education and medical practice, always based on the values of Hippocrates”.

On Friday, November 18, the Hellenic Medical Society of Australia and Hellenic Diaspora World Congress will be officially opened and will run a number of expert panels on topics including accessing global health care and new medical technologies.

The Congress will conclude on Saturday the 19th with a Fundraising Gala for community organisations PRONIA and Fronditha Care.

ΤΟ ΠΑΝΕΠΙΣΤΗΜΙΟ ΤΗΣ ΜΕΛΒΟΥΡΝΗΣ ΥΠΟΓΡΑΦΕΙ ΣΥΜΦΩΝΙΑ ΜΕ ΤΑ ΠΑΝΕΠΙΣΤΗΜΙΑ ΠΑΤΡΩΝ ΚΑΙ ΤΟ ΕΘΝΙΚΟ ΚΑΙ ΚΑΠΟΔΙΣΤΡΙΑΚΟ ΠΑΝΕΠΙΣΤΗΜΙΟ ΑΘΗΝΩΝ

Την Πέμπτη 17 Νοεμβρίου εκπρόσωποι της Ελληνικής Ιατρικής Ένωσης Αυστραλίας και του Παγκοσμίου Συνεδρίου Ιατρών και Βιοεπιστημόνων της Διασποράς συναντήθηκαν με εκπρόσωπους του τμήματος Ιατρικής, Οδοντιατρικής και Επιστημών Υγείας του Πανεπιστημίου της Μελβούρνης.

Η ομάδα των επιστημόνων της Ελληνικής Ιατρικής Ένωσης Αυστραλίας συμπεριελάμβανε την ομάδα καθηγητών των Ελληνικών Πανεπιστημίων, Κυβερνητικών αντιπροσώπων καθώς και μέλη του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου της Ελληνικής Κοινότητας Μελβούρνης (ΕΚΜ).

Η συνάντηση έλαβε χώρα στο πανεπιστήμιο της Μελβούρνης όπου και συζήτησαν για την μελλοντική τους συνεργασία στους τομείς της Καρδιολογίας και τις έρευνες που έχουν κάνει για την θεραπεία του Καρκίνου και μεταδοτικών ασθενειών.

Καίριο σημείο της συνάντησης ήταν η υπογραφή συμφωνίας μεταξύ των πανεπιστημίων της Μελβούρνης με τα Πανεπιστήμια Πατρών και το Εθνικό και Καποδιστριακό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών. Η συμφωνία αφορά την περαιτέρω συνεργασία ανταλλαγής απόφοιτων, μεταπτυχιακών και Μετα Διδακτορικών φοιτητών.

Ο Διευθύνων του Συνεδρίου Βοηθός Καθηγητή Μαρίνη Πιρπιρή και Ταμίας της ΕΚΜ υπογράμμισε την καίρια σημασία αυτής της συμφωνίας¨: « Είμαι πολύ ευχαριστημένος που μεσολαβήσαμε έτσι ώστε να πραγματοποιηθεί η συμφωνίας μεταξύ των τριών Πανεπιστημίων. Δεσμευόμαστε όχι μόνο να συνεργαστούμε στους τομείς της Διδασκαλίας και της Έρευνας αλλά και να δημιουργήσουμε ευκαιρίες για σεμινάρια, διδασκαλίες, εργαστήρια, ανταλλαγή ακαδημαϊκού υλικού, προγράμματα ανταλλαγής προσωπικού και οργάνωση κοινών πολιτιστικών εκδηλώσεων. Μας δίνετε μια σπάνια και μοναδική ευκαιρία να δημιουργήσουμε ισχυρούς δεσμούς και συνεργασίες μεταξύ των Ακαδημαϊκών και των σπουδαστών, οι οποίοι τυγχάνουν να προέρχονται από διαφορετικές εθνοτικές ομάδες» .

H καθηγήτρια Nicola Lautenschlager, Επικεφαλής του Ιατρικού τμήματος στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Μελβούρνης δήλωσε “Το Πανεπιστήμιο της Μελβούρνης εκτιμά, υποστηρίζει και προωθεί ιδιαίτερα την υπογραφή νέων συνεργασιών. Είμαστε ιδιαίτερα χαρούμενοι που υπογράψαμε την συγκεκριμένη συμφωνία με τα Πανεπιστήμια της Αθήνας και της Πάτρας. Μαζί θα καταφέρουμε όχι μόνο να ανταλλάξουμε ιδέες αλλά και να βρούμε τον σωστό τρόπο να εμπλουτίσουμε το πεδίο γνώσης των φοιτητών. Οι φοιτητές μας θα είναι πρωτοπόροι στην Ιατρική έρευνα και είναι πραγματικά μια μοναδική ευκαιρία να ενδυναμώσουμε το πάθος των φοιτητών για την Ιατρική.»

Ο Περιφερειάρχης Αττικής Γιώργος Πατούλης εξέφρασε την ικανοποίηση του για την υπογραφή της συμφωνίας « Είμαστε ικανοποιημένοι που παραβρεθήκαμε σήμερα σε αυτή την συνάντηση και την υπογραφή της συμφωνίας μεταξύ των πανεπιστημίων. Θα περιμένουμε και εμείς στην Αττική, μια ανάλογη εκδήλωση να λάβει χώρα και με μεγάλη χαρά να τους φιλοξενήσουμε.»

Ο Καθηγητής Γεώργιος Αντωνακάκης, Πρύτανης,Σχολή Ιατρικής,Πανεπιστήμιο φανερά ενθουσιασμένος για την υπογραφή της συμφωνίας είπε « Η σημερινή συμφωνία που απογράψαμε με το Πανεπιστήμιο της Μελβούρνης είναι ιδιαίτερη. Το Πανεπιστήμιο της Μελβούρνης είναι η πρώτη σε αξιολόγηση ιατρική σχολή στην Αυστραλία και στις υψηλότερες θέσεις σε κατάταξη στον κόσμο. Είναι μεγάλο πλεονέκτημα oι φοιτητές να έχουν εμπειρία στη σημερινή εποχή της παγκοσμιοποίησης.Είναι σημαντικό να γνωρίζουν πώς δουλεύει και πώς προοδεύει μια μεγάλη ιατρική σχολή, όπως είναι η Ιατρική Σχολή του πανεπιστημίου της Μελβούρνης».

Ο Πρόεδρος της ΕΚΜ, Βασίλης Παπαστεργιάδης δήλωσε «Η Ελλάδα και η Αυστραλία μοιράζονται μια πλούσια ιστορία και αξίες. Η ενδυνάμωση των δεσμών μας αποτελεί ένα πιο τα πιο σημαντικά κομμάτια της αποστολής μας στην Ελληνική Κοινότητας της Μελβούρνης. Η επιτυχία της σύναψης αυτής της συμφωνίας μεταξύ των Πανεπιστημίων στο τομέα της Ιατρικής είναι ένα ευχάριστο αποτέλεσμα το οποίο θα οδηγήσει στην ανταλλαγή φοιτητών και Ακαδημαϊκών. Αναπτύσσοντας αυτούς τους δεσμούς και παράλληλα προωθώντας τα κοινά ευρήματα των ερευνών τους θα συνδράμουν στο να ενισχύσουμε το εκπαιδευτικό και το πολιτισμικό οικοδόμημα μεταξύ των δύο χωρών. Ανυπομονώ να δω στο εγγύς μέλλον την περαιτέρω διεύρυνση των σχέσεων μας, στον τομέα της Ιατρικής ». «Οι φοιτητές της Ιατρικής στην Μελβούρνη θα έχουν πια την δυνατότητα να δουλέψουν και να μαθητεύσουν στην χώρα που γεννήθηκε ο Ιπποκράτης, ο πατέρας της Κλινικής Ιατρικής» .

Η Μίνα Γιαννέλη, Βοηθός Ταμία της ΕΚΜ, δήλωσε με την σειρά της « Είναι μεγάλη μας τιμή να είμαστε μέρος τόσο σημαντικών αποφάσεων μεταξύ των Πανεπιστημίων στην Αυστραλία και την Ελλάδα. Είναι μία μοναδική ευκαιρία για τους φοιτητές και στις δύο χώρες να διευρύνουν το πεδίο των σπουδών τους και το πεδίο έρευνας τους και σε άλλες χώρες. Αυτή η κοινή συμφωνίας είναι μοναδική στο είδος της και προσδοκούμε να συνεχιστεί για πολλά χρόνια».

Ο Δρ.Μάριος Θεμιστοκλέους μετά την υπογραφή της συμφωνίας δήλωσε «Είμαστε πολύ χαρούμενοι που βρισκόμαστε σήμερα εδώ και εκ μέρους του Υπουργείου Υγείας και εκ μέρους του κύριου Πλεύρη, στηρίζουμε τέτοιου είδους προσπάθειες τις οποίες φέρνουν κοντά δύο χώρες, δύο λαούς. Ειδικά η Αυστραλία με μια μεγάλη ελληνική κοινότητα που δραστηριοποιείται πάρα πολλά χρόνια και αυτό κάνει τα πράγματα παρά την απόσταση, να μπορούν να έρθουν και δικοί μας επιστήμονες να εκπαιδευτούν αλλά και Αυστραλοί να έρθουν στην Ελλάδα.».

Στο πέρας της σημαντικής συνάντησης, ο κ. Γιώργος Πατούλης έκανε τα αποκαλυπτήρια του αντιγράφου της προτομής του Ιπποκράτη, σύμβολο της συμφωνίας.

Την Παρασκευή, 18 Νοεμβρίου θα πραγματοποιηθεί η επίσημη έναρξη της Ελληνικής Ιατρικής Ένωσης Αυστραλίας και του Παγκοσμίου Συνεδρίου Ιατρών και Βιοεπιστημόνων της Διασποράς με μια σειρά από ενδιαφέρουσες ομιλίες,συζητήσεις και παρουσιάσεις γύρω από τον τομέα της Υγείας.

Το Συνέδριο θα ολοκληρωθεί το Σάββατο 19 Νοεμβρίου με το Φιλανθρωπικό Gala προκειμένου να ενισχύσουν τους οργανισμούς της Πρόνοιας και της Φροντίδας
