GCM President Meets Deputy Foreign Minister

A rich platform of bilateral agreements and cultural programs formed the basis of the meeting between Bill Papastergiadis OAM, and Mr Kotsiras Deputy Foreign Minister. The Deputy Foreign Minister also pledged to visit Australia in the very near future.

In one of his first meetings with representatives of the diaspora following being sworn as a Minister and which meeting extended for an hour, Bill Papastergiadis, raised a number of issues as formulated by the GCM Board. Also in attendance was the General Secretary for Greeks Abroad, Mr Chrysoulakis.

Key issues that were discussed included the finalisation of bilateral agreements, cultural and sporting exchanges as well as educational programs of students as well as for the teaching cohort.

In particular, reference was made for the need for a bilateral Health Agreement. It was noted that this Agreement will need significant pressure from Greece given the current reticence of the Australian Government on this matter. On the issue of Agreements, it was emphasised that the Double Taxation Agreement should also be finalised in the next few months.

Bill Papastergiadis noted that the recent University agreement facilitated by the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) at the recent Hellenic Medical Conference hosted at the Greek Centre in Melbourne has produced great results. At the conference, the Universities of Melbourne and Athens and Patras executed an agreement for the facilitation of medical student and professorial exchanges of the medical faculties.

In a conversation with the Dean of the Medical Faculty of Patras University, Professor Antoniadis confirmed, that medical students from Australia would soon be attending Patras Medical School. Bill Papastergiadis then suggested that this Agreement now needs to be expanded into other faculties particularly the Humanities Faculties.

Mr Chrysoulakis noted how the current student cultural tour of Greece funded by the GCM and the Greek Foreign Ministry was a resounding success, and it was agreed that this would be pursued into the years to come.

Other issues discussed was the need for more staff at the consulate, a continuation of art exchanges between the two countries with a particular focus on residencies for artists.

On the issue of the vote for the diaspora, the abolition of the current restrictions was raised as well as the need for the postal vote given the distances in the diaspora for citizens to vote at the consulate offices.

It was agreed that these matters would be confirmed by the GCM Board in writing and would be followed up.

Ο ΠΡΟΕΔΡΟΣ ΤΗΣ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗΣ ΚΟΙΝΟΤΗΤΑΣ ΜΕΛΒΟΥΡΝΗΣ ΣΥΝΑΝΤΗΘΗΚΕ ΜΕ ΤΟΝ ΝΕΟ ΥΦΥΠΟΥΡΓΟ ΕΞΩΤΕΡΙΚΩΝ ΤΗΣ ΕΛΛΑΔΑΣ

O Πρόεδρος της Ελληνικής Κοινότητας Μελβούρνης (ΕΚΜ) Βασίλης Παπαστεργιάδης συναντήθηκε με τον Υφυπουργό Εξωτερικών της Ελλάδας Γιώργο Κώτσηρα,. Ο Υφυπουργός Εξωτερικών δεσμεύτηκε κατά την διάρκεια της συνάντησης να επισκεφθεί σύντομα την Αυστραλία.

Σε μία από τις πρώτες του συναντήσεις μετά την ορκομωσία του ως Υφυπουργός ο κ. Κώτσηρας συναντήθηκε με αντιπροσώπους της διασποράς.

Ο Βασίλης Παπαστεργιάδης συζήτησε μαζί του μια σειρά θεμάτων που είχαν διατυπωθεί από το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο της ΕΚΜ. Παρών στην συνάντηση ήταν και ο Γενικός Γραμματέας για τους Έλληνες στο εξωτερικό, κ. Χρυσουλάκης.

Τα κύρια σημεία της συνάντησης περιλάμβαναν την ολοκλήρωση διμερών συμφωνιών, συνεργασίας που θα αφορούν πολιτιστικά και αθλητικά θέματα, εκπαιδευτικά προγράμματα για φοιτητές καθώς και το προσωπικό που απασχολείτε στον τομέα της διδασκαλίας.

Συγκεκριμένα, αναφέρθηκε στο ζήτημα που αφορά την διμερή συμφωνία στον τομέα της υγείας. Επισημάνθηκε ότι αυτή η συμφωνία απαιτεί σημαντική πίεση από την πλευρά της Ελλάδας, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη την παρούσα θέση της Αυστραλιανής Κυβέρνησης επί του θέματος.

Όσον αφορά τις συμφωνίες, τονίστηκε ότι η Συμφωνία Διπλής Φορολογίας θα πρέπει οπωσδήποτε να ολοκληρωθεί τους επόμενους μήνες.

Ο Βασίλης Παπαστεργιάδης σημείωσε ότι η πρόσφατη συμφωνία που υπογράφτηκε μεταξύ των Πανεπιστημίων της Πάτρας, Αθήνας, Μελβούρνης και της ΕΚΜ κατά την διάρκεια του Ελληνικού Ιατρικού Συνέδριού που φιλοξενήθηκε στο Ελληνικό Κέντρο της Μελβούρνης έχει επιφέρει καρπούς. Η ανωτέρω συμφωνία αφορούσε την ανταλλαγή φοιτητών και διδακτικού προσωπικού μεταξύ των ιατρικών σχολών τους.

Σε μια συνομιλία με τον Διευθυντή της Ιατρικής Σχολής του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών, ο καθηγητής Αντωνιάδης επιβεβαίωσε στον Βασίλης Παπαστεργιάδη, ότι φοιτητές ιατρικής από την Αυστραλία θα παρακολουθήσουν μαθήματα στην Ιατρική Σχολή του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών.

Ο Βασίλης, πρότεινε στη συνέχεια ότι αυτή η συμφωνία πρέπει τώρα να επεκταθεί και σε άλλες σχολές, ιδιαίτερα στις ανθρωπιστικές σχολές.

Ο κ. Χρυσουλάκης σημείωσε πόσο επιτυχημένο το τρέχον πρόγραμμα της Θερινής Κατασκήνωσης στην Ελλάδα, που χρηματοδοτήθηκε από την ΕΚΜ και το Ελληνικό Υπουργείο Εξωτερικών και συμφωνήθηκε ότι αυτό θα συνεχιστεί και στα επόμενα χρόνια.

Μεταξύ άλλων, συζητήθηκαν θέματα που περιλάμβαναν την ανάγκη για περισσότερο προσωπικό στο προξενείο, τη συνέχιση των πολιτιστικών ανταλλαγών μεταξύ των δύο χωρών με έμφαση στην δημιουργία πολιτιστικής έδρας για τους ενασχολούμενους με τις τέχνες.

Σχετικά με το θέμα της ψήφου για τη διασπορά, αναφέρθηκε στην κατάργηση των τρεχουσών περιορισμών και την υπογράμμισε την επιτακτική ανάγκη δημιουργίας διαδικασιών για σχετικά με την επιστολική ψήφο, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τις αποστάσεις στη διασπορά, ώστε οι πολίτες να μπορούν να ψηφίζουν στα προξενεία.

Συμφωνήθηκε ότι τα ανωτέρω θα καταγραφούν από το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο του ΕΚΜ και θα συζητηθούν περαιτέρω έτσι ώστε να υλοποιηθούν.
