The GCM Schools Organized an Olive Picking Activity

“If you deconstruct Greece, you will in the end see an olive tree, a grapevine, and a boat remain. That is, with as much, you reconstruct her.," said Odysseas Elytis, highlighting in his few but meaningful words how intertwined the olive tree is with our country.

Olive cultivation is an integral part of Greek traditions. In Greece, the harvest takes place from November to March, while in Australia, it occurs from May to September, depending on the ripening of the olives. This harvest is a captivating and highly labour-intensive process with a long-standing history. Starting from the tree and ending at the olive press, the olives are transformed into the final product ready for consumption. Olive oil holds a significant place in every Greek household and is a staple on every Greek table.

In an effort to allow our students to experience this unique process and forge a deeper connection with Greek traditions and way of life, the GCM Schools organized an "olive picking" activity. This event took place in the courtyard of Bentleigh Secondary College in Bentleigh, where olive trees had been planted.

The school yard echoed with children's voices, smiles, and above all, enthusiasm for this exciting task. Throughout the olive picking activity, the students bombarded us with a series of questions. At first, their movements were hesitant, but as the hours passed and with appropriate guidance, each child was able to make a significant contribution towards achieving our goal, which, on that day, was the collection of the olives. However, the gains went far beyond that. Through collaboration, the students gained a profound understanding of the work required to produce such an essential product like olive oil.

The olives that the children picked were prepared to be consumed by all the students. Additionally, the children had the opportunity to make their own delicious olive bread. As a reward for their efforts, apart from the knowledge and rich experience they acquired, each student received a generous slice of homemade bread adorned with oil and olives.

Overall, the activity was a resounding success, fostering teamwork, cultural appreciation, and a genuine understanding of the value and effort behind olive oil production.

Εάν αποσυνθέσεις την Ελλάδα, στο τέλος θα δεις να σου απομένουν μια ελιά, ένα αμπέλι κι ένα καράβι. Που σημαίνει, με άλλα τόσα την ξαναφτιάχνεις" είχε πει ο Οδυσσέας Ελύτης αναδεικνύοντας στις λίγες αλλά μεστές κουβέντες του πόσο συνυφασμένη με τη χώρα μας είναι η ελιά.

Η ελαιοκαλλιέργεια είναι ίσως η πλέον παραδοσιακή. Κατά την περίοδο Νοεμβρίου-Μαρτίου στην Ελλάδα και Μαΐου—Σεπτεμβρίου στην Αυστραλία, ανάλογα με την ωρίμανση των καρπών, γίνεται η συγκομιδή τους που αποτελεί μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα και εξαιρετικά κοπιαστική διαδικασία με πολύ μεγάλη ιστορία.

Από το δέντρο στο δοχείο της συγκομιδής ή στο λιόπανο και στη συνέχεια στο ελαιοτριβείο, η ελιά προσφέρει στον άνθρωπο είτε τον ίδιο τον καρπό της ως βρώσιμο, ή το πολύτιμο λάδι της, αυτονόητο σε κάθε ελληνικό σπίτι και τραπέζι.

Θέλοντας οι μαθητές μας να βιώσουν τη μοναδική αυτή διαδικασία και να δημιουργήσουν έναν ακόμα δεσμό με την ελληνική παράδοση και ζωή οργανώθηκε «μάζεμα της ελιάς» στα ελαιόδεντρα που υπάρχουν στον προαύλιο χώρο του Bentleigh Secondary College για τους μαθητές των τάξεων του Δημοτικού της μονάδας μας στο Bentleigh.

Παιδικές φωνές, χαμόγελα και πάνω απ' όλα διάθεση για κάτι καινούργιο σκορπίστηκαν στην αυλή. Κατά τη διάρκεια της δραστηριότητας, οι ερωτήσεις διαδέχονταν η μία την άλλη… Οι απορίες των παιδιών εύλογες. Οι κινήσεις τους στην αρχή μουδιασμένες, αλλά με το πέρασμα της ώρας και την κατάλληλη καθοδήγηση ο καθένας μπορούσε να προσφέρει κάτι σημαντικό στην προσπάθεια επίτευξης του στόχου, οποίος εκείνη την ημέρα μπορεί να ήταν η συλλογή του καρπού, ωστόσο τα κέρδη ήταν πολλαπλά, αφού, εκτός από την εμπειρία της συνεργασίας που βίωσαν, οι μαθητές αντιλήφθηκαν την εργασία που απαιτείται, για να παραχθεί ένα τόσο σημαντικό προϊόν όπως είναι το ελαιόλαδο.

Τις ελιές που μάζεψαν τα παιδιά, τις προετοίμασαν να γίνουν βρώσιμες και να φαγωθούν, όταν θα είναι πια έτοιμες, απ' όλους τους μαθητές. Τα παιδιά είχαν ακόμα την ευκαιρία να φτιάξουν το δικό τους μοσχομυριστό ελιόψωμο. Η ανταμοιβή τους, πέρα από τις γνώσεις και την πλούσια εμπειρία που απέκτησαν, ήταν μια μεγάλη φέτα σπιτικό ψωμί, με λάδι και ελιές.
