GCM Students Visit Bonegilla

On Sunday, 19 June, the students of the Language and Culture Schools of the Greek Community in Melbourne visited the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre. This activity was part of their preparation for the oral examinations of the VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education).

The students had the opportunity to enrich their knowledge about the historical parameters and living conditions of the early migrants during the decades of the '50s to '70s through lectures by the Centre's officials, on-site exploration of the accommodations, and educational materials that were distributed to them.

The students showed a particular interest in the content of their educational excursion and enjoyed the experience, which will undoubtedly accompany them over time.

The Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre started at the end of World War II when millions of migrants left their countries in search of a better fortune. The military facilities were transformed into a reception and training centre for migrants. The number of migrants who passed through the centre between 1947 and 1971 reached 300,000.

Τη Κυριακή 19 Ιουνίου οι μαθητές της Γ΄Λυκείου επισκέφτηκαν το κέντρο υποδοχής και κατάρτισης μεταναστών, Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre. Η δράση έγινε στο πλαίσιο της προετοιμασίας τους για τις προφορικές εξετάσεις του VCE.

Τα παιδιά είχαν την ευκαιρία να εμπλουτίσουν τις γνώσεις τους σχετικά με τις ιστορικές παραμέτρους και τις συνθήκες διαβίωσης των πρωτοαφιχθέντων μεταναστών κατά τη διάρκεια των δεκαετιών ‘50-‘70, μέσα από διαλέξεις των υπευθύνων του Κέντρου, επιτόπια εξερεύνηση των καταλυμάτων και διδακτικό υλικό που τους διανεμήθηκε.

Οι μαθητές έδειξαν ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον για το περιεχόμενο της εκπαιδευτικής τους εκδρομής και απόλαυσαν την εμπειρία που, οπωσδήποτε, θα τους συνοδεύει σε βάθος χρόνου.

To Bongegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre ξεκίνησε στο τέλος του Δεύτερου Παγκόσμιου Πολέμου όταν εκατομμύρια μετανάστες εγκατέλειπαν την χώρα τους προκειμένου να αναζητήσουν καλύτερη τύχη. Οι στρατιωτικές εγκαταστάσεις μετατράπηκαν σε κέντρο υποδοχής και κατάρτισης μεταναστών. Ο αριθμός των μεταναστών που πέρασε το κέντρο μεταξύ του 1947 και 1971 έφτασε τους 300,000.
