GCM and NUGAS to Form a Subcommittee on Youth Matters

The Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) welcomed the newly elected National Union of Greek Australian Students Victoria’s (NUGAS) committee to The Greek Centre for a roundtable discussion and agreed on the joint formation of a subcommittee that will formulate a plan on engaging with the youth.

The meeting was organised by ex-NUGAS president and current GCM Board Member Tass Sgardelis who emphasised the two organisations long history of collaboration. Joining Tass were GCM President Bill Papastergiadis OAM and Vice President Michael Karamitos who were also eager to listen to the new NUGAS committee’s vision, and to see how the GCM can best play a supporting role.

Discussions focused on the GCM facilitating a youth subcommittee with plans to meet once a month to collaborate on programs and events. NUGAS Co-Presidents Marissa Robotis and Billy Battista confirmed NUGAS’ interest in the proposal and expressed their excitement to the idea.

Bill Papastergiadis OAM stated that the youth subcommittee “is a pathway for input at a critical part of our community and which will assist in the facilitation of leadership for the GCM going forward.” Agreeing with Bill, Michael Karamitos explained that this current GCM board is “dedicated to creating a pathway in which the Greek Australian youth can directly communicate with the GCM and work together on new ideas.”

Further to discussing the youth subcommittee, Billy Battista and Marissa Robotis updated the GCM on their planned events including their End of Semester Festa a collaboration with VITA (Victorian Italian-Australian Tertiary Association). With this, the co-presidents explained a substantial focus of NUGAS’ 2023/24 executive team is to celebrate NUGAS’ 50-year anniversary with an alumni event.

The GCM delegation were enthusiastic about this project and where happy to offer a helping hand. Bill Papastergiadis OAM advised the NUGAS committee that “the GCM will value add where we can and help maximise [NUGAS’] vision. It is imperative that the GCM listens to the voices of NUGAS and is proactive in developing programs that allow for engagement on cultural and educational matters”.

NUGAS Education Officer Christina Savopoulos also spoke on the assistance the GCM gave with the 2022 VCE Oral Greek Exam Help Session and was looking to see how to further involve the GCM with future educational activities NUGAS plans to run. Christina stated that a great ambition of her education committee was to help assist post VCE students continue their journey with modern Greek into tertiary levels and beyond.

Tass Sgardelis who sits on the GCM’s education committee along with Bill Papastergiadis offered to help promote NUGAS’ educational activities within the GCM schools, but to also promote their programs further across the Greek schools in Victoria.

The youth subcommittee will have its first meeting in late July.

Η ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΚΟΙΝΟΤΗΤΑ ΜΕΛΒΟΥΡΝΗΣ ΔΗΜΙΟΥΡΓΕΙ ΥΠΟΕΠΙΤΡΟΠΗ ΣΧΕΤΙΚΑ ΜΕ ΤΑ ΖΗΤΗΜΑΤΑ ΠΟΥ ΑΠΑΣΧΟΛΟΥΝ ΤΟΥΣ ΝΕΟΥΣ

Η Ελληνική Κοινότητα της Μελβούρνης (ΕΚΜ) υποδέχθηκε την νεοεκλεγείσα επιτροπή του Εθνικού Συνδέσμου Ελληνο-Αυστραλών Φοιτητών Βικτωρίας (NUGAS) στο Ελληνικό Κέντρο προκειμένου να συζητήσουν για την δημιουργία κοινής υποεπιτροπής που θα διαμορφώσει ένα σχέδιο για την πιο ενεργή συμμετοχή των νέων.

Η συνάντηση οργανώθηκε από τον πρώην πρόεδρο του NUGAS και νυν μέλος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου της ΕΚΜ, Τάσο Σγαρδέλη, ο οποίος υπογράμμισε τη μακρά ιστορία συνεργασίας των δύο οργανισμών. Μαζί με τον πρόεδρο της ΕΚΜ, Βασίλη Παπαστεργιάδη, και τον αντιπρόεδρο Μιχάλη Καραμήτο, οι οποίοι ήταν επίσης ενθουσιασμένοι να ακούσουν τη νέα επιτροπή του NUGAS και να δουν πώς η ΕΚΜ μπορεί να έχει έναν υποστηρικτικό ρόλο.

Οι συζητήσεις επικεντρώθηκαν στον ρόλο της ΕΚΜ ως φορέα που θα διευκολύνει μια υποεπιτροπή νέων με προγραμματισμένες συναντήσεις μία φορά το μήνα για τη συνεργασία σε προγράμματα και εκδηλώσεις. Οι συν-πρόεδροι του NUGAS, Μαρίσα Ρομπότη και Μπίλι Μπατίστα, επιβεβαίωσαν το ενδιαφέρον του NUGAS για την πρόταση και εξέφρασαν τον ενθουσιασμό τους για την ιδέα.

Ο Βασίλης Παπαστεργιάδης δήλωσε ότι η υποεπιτροπή νέων "είναι μια σημαντική κίνηση όπου θα λειτουργήσει ως κοιτίδα για νέους ηγέτες στο μέλλον ". Συμφωνώντας με τον Βασίλη, ο Μιχάλης Καραμήτος εξήγησε ότι το τρέχον Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο της ΕΚΜ "είναι αφοσιωμένο στη δημιουργία ενός νέου δίαυλου επικοινωνίας, στο οποίο οι νέοι μπορούν να επικοινωνούν απευθείας με την ΕΚΜ και να συνεργάζονται για νέες ιδέες".

Πέρα από τη συζήτηση για την υποεπιτροπή νέων, ο Μπίλι Μπατίστα και η Μαρίσα Ρομπότη ενημέρωσαν την ΕΚΜ για τις προγραμματιζόμενες εκδηλώσεις τους, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του "End of Semester Festa" που θα πραγματοποιηθεί σε συνεργασία με τη VITA (Victorian Italian-Australian Tertiary Association). Οι συν-πρόεδροι εξήγησαν ότι από τους πιο σημαντικούς στόχους της εκτελεστικής ομάδας του NUGAS για το 2023/24 είναι να γιορτάσει την 50η επέτειο του NUGAS με τον σύνδεσμο αποφοίτων.

Η αντιπροσωπεία της ΕΚΜ στο άκουσμα της ιδέας ενθουσιάστηκε και ήταν πρόθυμη να βοηθήσει. Ο Βασίλης Παπαστεργιάδης ενημέρωσε την επιτροπή του NUGAS ότι "Η ΕΚΜ θα συμβάλει με την σειρά της στο μέγιστο έτσι να συνδράμει στην υλοποίηση του οράματος [του NUGAS]. Είναι απαραίτητο η ΕΚΜ να στηρίζει και να συνεργάζεται στενά με το NUGAS για την ανάπτυξη προγραμμάτων που επιτρέπουν τη συμμετοχή των νέων σε θέματα πολιτισμού και εκπαίδευσης".

Η Χριστίνα Σαβόπουλος, εκπρόσωπος της επιτροπής εκπαίδευσης του NUGAS, μίλησε επίσης για τη βοήθεια που παρείχε η ΕΚΜ με την Προφορική Εξέταση του VCE το 2022 και είναι αισιόδοξη ότι η ΕΚΜ θα ενισχύσει τις μελλοντικές εκπαιδευτικές δραστηριότητες της στον τομέα της τριτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης.

Ο ΤάσοςΣγαρδέλης, ο οποίος συμμετέχει στην επιτροπή εκπαίδευσης της ΕΚΜ μαζί με τον Βασίλη Παπαστεργιάδη, προσφέρθηκαν να βοηθήσουν στην προώθηση των εκπαιδευτικών δραστηριοτήτων του NUGAS στα σχολεία του ΕΚΜ, αλλά και να υποστηρίξουν περαιτέρω τα προγράμματά τους στα ελληνικά σχολεία της Βικτώριας.

Η υποεπιτροπή νεολαίας θα έχει την πρώτη της συνεδρίαση στα τέλη Ιουλίου.
