The Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) presents Coming Out For Christmas – A Live Radio Play written and produced by Demetra Giannakopoulos on 30 September at The Greek Centre.
The play is presented as part of the GCM’s Storytelling project.
Coming Out For Christmas is presented as a Radio Play in which 5 actors live read the show which is accompanied by live music and sound effects. It is performed in English.
Coming Out For Christmas tells the story of Alex who brings her girlfriend home for her family Christmas lunch and discovers her conservative Greek family is hiding away from everyone.
“At the heart of Coming Out for Christmas is a reconciliation of mother and daughter where there is a tension of needing to be true to yourself and still honour and love your family” writes Giannakopoulos. She also states that the narrative of Coming Out For Christmas is “important because it can be difficult to have honest conversations, where we seem to be diametrically opposed.”
Demetra Giannakopoulos is a Melbourne based independent film and theatre writer and director. She writes and directs contemporary Australian stories that explore cultural and social issues in an entertaining way. She is also the founder of Idolon Films a production company which focuses on telling modern, personal stories.
