The Greek Community of Melbourne presents
The Annual John Berger Memorial Lecture
John Berger was an English art critic, novelist, painter and poet. His novel G. won the 1972 Booker Prize, and his ground-breaking essay on art criticism Ways of Seeing, written as an accompaniment to the BBC series of the same name, is credited with transforming the way in which a generation looked at and understood art.
Presented by Yves Berger and Isaac Klotz
Since 2021, The Greek Community of Melbourne has celebrated John Berger’s impact on art, social and critical theory by hosting an annual lecture. In 2023, Yves Berger will share letters that he and his father John Berger wrote to each other, explaining differing views and perspectives of various artistic masterpieces. Isaac Klotz, who will be narrating John’s perspective will be joining the audience at The Greek Centre to help Yves celebrate John's unique outlook and explore the way John influenced the way art is viewed and understood
About
About Yves Berger
Yves Berger is a painter who lives and works in a small mountain village in the French alps. He grew-up amongst the peasants surrounding his home and the many artists regularly visiting his father John Berger. This specific context is the ground on which his artwork has grown and developed over the last 25 years. Questioning human nature within nature itself, he has been using visual mediums such as drawing, painting, monoprint, etching and sculpture. This sensitive and empiric observation of the world appears in his many writings, might it be his essays or books of poems. His work has been shown in several countries through-out europe and is held in numerous private collection, including in the USA. In 2001 he was awarded by the Stravinsky Price for painting in Geneva.

About Isaac Klotz
Isaac White Klotz was born in Sydney, Australia. At a few months old he moved to Sri Lanka where he attended a French kindergarden until the age of five. He then moved to a small village in the French alps, not far from Yves Berger's home. When Isaac and Yves met in the summer of 2021, they soon realized they had similar interests, including art. In 2022, Isaac worked for Yves, organizing letters that John Berger had received throughout his career.
In the future, Isaac aspires to make art a central activity in his life and to one day live from his passion. For now, he is traveling around Australia, working on farms along the way.
