Αριάδνη/Ariadne is a bold reimagining of the ancient Greek myth of Ariadne of Crete with original music. Departing from the traditional focus on the Minotaur and Theseus, this contemporary tragedy delves into Ariadne’s upbringing in Crete and her yearning for freedom. Written in both English & Greek, this immersive storytelling experience takes the audience through Ariadne’s personal labyrinth of finding her voice as she reclaims her agency as a heroine. Inspired by the #metoo movement wave in Greece, Αριάδνη/Ariadne acknowledges that in the struggle for change, the only way out is in. Αριάδνη/Ariadne is a poignant reflection on the universal struggle for self-discovery resonating with audiences in Australia, Greece, and beyond as it navigates the complexities of gender, power, and identity.
“Ariadne, for Alkisti has been portrayed as ‘someone fooled and as someone abandoned’ but to her ‘she is an architect, intelligent, caring, brave, and hungry for knowledge’.” – Neos Kosmos
“Like Euripides, Alikisti Pitsaki constructs theatre as a reflection of the polis and a conversation with the demos. She says it ‘is impossible to create art that is not affected by the conditions of your time’.” – Neos Kosmos

Written in both English & Greek, this immersive story takes the audience through Ariadne’s personal labyrinth of finding her voice as she reclaims her agency as a heroine. Inspired by the 2020 #metoo movement wave in Greece, Αριάδνη/Ariadne acknowledges that in the struggle for change, the only way out is in. Αριάδνη/Ariadne is a poignant reflection on the universal struggle for self-discovery resonating with audiences in Australia, Greece, and beyond as it navigates the complexities of gender, power, and identity. Ariadne has been selected to be part of Mother Tongues, a new festival presented by La Mama Theatre and will be performed at La Mama Courthouse from November 22nd to 24th.
This project has been in the works for quite some time, and we have formed a beautiful group of artists from Australia and Greece. We are all very proud to bring Αριάδνη/Ariadne to the La Mama stage. Lead artists Alkisti Pitsaki (writer/director living in Australia) and Nikki Tetsou (composer in Greece) have created a work that responds to the increasing discussions surrounding autonomy and the female body, not only in Greece but also in Australia. Ariadne is an often overlooked character in her myth. This contemporary tragedy gives the space for Ariadne to tell us her own story and encourages anyone who has felt dismissed to celebrate their strength and reclaim their story. While it offers a modern take on the ancient myth, this bilingual work is heavily inspired by the artists' heritage and culture, inviting both Greek-speaking and non-Greek-speaking audiences to the theatre.
The play features a live chorus of women who weave spoken text with 13 original songs. With your support, we can bring our vision to life by recording and producing the songs for the performance, as well as enhancing the staging and costumes. Additionally, these funds will help support the artists involved, both in Greece and Australia. Thank you for helping us make this project a reality!
